What exactly is SEO?

by | Jan 27, 2024 | Web Tips

It’s ok to ask basic questions. Some businesses still using traditional marketing methods might still be adjusting or trying to translate what their marketing agency says. Let’s break SEO down for the beginners.

I’m going to get right to the point and make this as simple as possible. In no way is it to make someone feel like a child, but simply to apply basic terms and examples to a seemingly complex topic. I’ve watched all types of business owners blindly follow and throw money at website designers and marketing agents because they didn’t have a core understanding of what SEO (Search Engine Optimization) actually is.

Alright, so what exactly is SEO?

Well, imagine you have a big box of toys, and you want to find your favorite toy inside it. SEO is like magic that helps people find their favorite toys on the internet.

Just like you organize your toys neatly in your box so you can quickly find them, SEO helps websites organize their information so people can easily find what they’re looking for when they search on the internet.

When you type something into a special box called a search engine, like asking a grown-up where your favorite toy is, SEO helps the search engine find the best answers to your question. So, if a website has good SEO, it’s like having your favorite toy right on top of the box where you can grab it quickly. That’s why businesses want good SEO, so people can find them easily and play with their website!

And that’s it in the simplest explanation I can possibly give. However,  as we move further along, it can be more complex. So many little things can impact that search, positively and negatively. This is where professionals can pick up the baton and run.

Here’s a list of items that have an impact on website SEO.

Quality Content: High-quality, relevant, and original content is crucial for SEO. It helps attract visitors, encourages engagement, and earns backlinks from other websites. Content should be informative, engaging, and tailored to the needs of the target audience.

Keywords: Keywords are the words and phrases people use when searching for information online. Integrating relevant keywords into website content, titles, headings, and meta descriptions helps search engines understand the relevance of the content to user queries.

Meta Tags: Meta tags, including title tags and meta descriptions, provide concise summaries of web page content to search engine users. Optimizing meta tags with relevant keywords and compelling descriptions can improve click-through rates and enhance SEO performance.

Website Structure: A well-organized website structure, including clear navigation and logical hierarchy, improves user experience and search engine crawlability. Properly structured websites make it easier for search engines to index content and understand the relationships between different pages.

Backlinks: Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. They serve as votes of confidence in your content and can significantly impact search engine rankings. High-quality backlinks from authoritative websites signal to search engines that your content is valuable and relevant.

Mobile-Friendliness: With the increasing use of mobile devices, having a mobile-friendly website is essential for SEO. Mobile-responsive design ensures that websites display properly and function seamlessly across various screen sizes and devices, improving user experience and search engine rankings.

Page Speed: Page speed refers to how quickly a web page loads. Fast-loading pages provide a better user experience and are favored by search engines. Optimizing images, reducing server response times, and minimizing unnecessary scripts can help improve page speed and SEO performance.

User Experience (UX): User experience encompasses various factors, including site speed, mobile-friendliness, navigation, and content quality. Websites that prioritize user experience tend to rank higher in search engine results, as search engines aim to deliver the best possible results to users.

Social Signals: Social signals, such as likes, shares, and comments on social media platforms, can indirectly impact SEO. While social signals themselves may not directly influence search engine rankings, they can help increase brand visibility, drive traffic to your website, and attract potential backlinks.

Local SEO: For businesses targeting local customers, optimizing for local SEO is crucial. This involves optimizing website content, creating and maintaining local business listings, and garnering positive reviews to improve visibility in local search results and attract nearby customers.

tl;dr SEO is like a magic organizer for websites, helping search engines find the most relevant content quickly. Key factors impacting SEO include quality content, strategic keywords, optimized meta tags, mobile-friendliness, fast page speed, user experience, and strong backlinks. The ultimate goal is to help businesses connect with potential customers by appearing prominently in search results and providing valuable, easily discoverable online experiences.
